I have

drawn up a brief plan of how I am going to write about Phenomenology and the self portrait. This plan is far from complete and is more like a loose map rather than offering a strict structure to build upon.

The tricky part is of how I am going to start, and this is what I always find is the hardest part. How to open the discussion of the self portrait and phenomenology and to start by making a firm connection.

The plan follows the structure of:

1) Consciousness

2) Self Consciousness

3) Pre Reflective Self Consciousness

4) Being or Dasein

5) Phenomenology

6) Intentionality

7) Epoche

8) Transcendental

9) Indexicality

10) Memory

What I need to bear in mind and mustn’t lose sight of is that this has all got to relate to the self portrait. I think starting with the topic of consciousness is fairly solid in itself as I can emphasise the sense of presence within a self portrait, that we are seeing more than just a physical representation of who they are. But I do feel that each section naturally leads to the next and by tackling it this way will make the thesis relative, focused and coherent.

It would also be nice to link empathy with the viewer, that the viewer builds an emotional connection to the image, that they can sense more of the person rather than the body. I think it is this which gives the self portrait its sense of intimacy, something that is beyond just the mere physical.

Also, I will need to bear in mind that this is an analysis of the self portrait from the perspective of the viewer and it is an attempt to be “tuning into” what the photographer is expressing. This is dependent on my own understanding of photography, which will hopefully be compatible with the thought process of the photographer / subject.
