Metaphors.

A metaphor is something that appears to be like something else, it has elements that represent another definition and can be an expression of what is represented.

With these sand sculptures they are representing the world of thought through texture and fluidity.  Thoughts can and do meander, intertwine, break off and become knotted as well as running smoothly and efficiently.  All thoughts have a sensation of motion, they are not still and static and this movement is part of the nature of thought.  Also, thoughts have a texture, sometimes they have a sensation of smoothness and ease, other times they are jagged and sharp, but sometimes a mixture of the two.
