Things have changed again!
Since my last post I have been thinking about producing 10 pages of the manifesto as my final submission and I’ve decided in a slight change of direction.
So, the plan is now to finish the manifesto by adding photographs to the text and then in addition to this, to produce a series of campaign posters. Both of these fit together really well as both are items used in a general election campaign and both will support the other.
There will be 5 posters in total, each covering the different subjects, which are the economy, immigration, health, education and welfare. I did originally plan to produce four images around four politicians based on being the four horsemen of the apocalypse, but I feel that this misses the point and I can produce posters that are more relevant and pertinent.
I have also now managed to finish off the manifesto, of which can be found in the gallery below. Overall, I think it’s ok but does need to be refined as some of the images and text are a bit too obvious and lack imagination, such as page 75 with Cameron having a Hitler moustache. However, with the manifesto I can carry on adding and changing until it is submitted to be printed, which doesn’t have to be for at least a couple of weeks, and so can still be treated as work in progress.
I have tried to stick to keeping a cohesive narrative running through the imagery, which does work to a certain extent. I wanted to use images that showed oppression, abuse of power and violence to emphasise the nature of Utopia, which is that it can only be obtained by a certain social class of people and is built on the submission of the masses. One powerful example of this is the Nazi regime before and during world war 2, which was their attempt to build their version of a Utopian society whilst subjecting a minority calls, the Jews, to oppression and control. It’s a case that freedom for a few is built upon the slavery of the many.
By including a lot of imagery of Nazis, Klu Klax Klan, Police violence, poverty, oppression and subjugation I am making a connection between the conservatives and these organisations and qualities. Admittedly it could be subtler, but photomontage doesn’t really do subtlety, it’s a tool that is often used bluntly and with force. However, the state is not above using these tactics to subdue people and the people in charge of the state currently are the Conservatives.
