Yesterday I had a tutorial with my tutor about my recent work on the artefact, of which the latest images are below. I showed the progress that I have made and the following points have been raised.
It seems that I am going too far with the Nazi connection and that I need to be more subtle. I agree with this because by being so obvious and blunt with the imagery I am not letting the viewer engage fully with the imagery. It’s a case that there is a lack of ambiguity with the images which in turn means that the images lack the depth to be more engaging and interesting to the viewer.
Another point that was made is with only using one image overlaying the page lacks creativity. I think I was falling into the trap of following the Adam and Ollie example of The Holy Bible too closely and was in danger of producing a copy of their work without reinterpreting it and in all honesty feels a bit lazy. It seems that all I have to do is find some world war 2 photographs of Germans and insert them, which does not make the production of the montage very challenging.
It was also pointed out that I do not need to do the whole manifesto, that a selection of pages will be just as good.
The last point that was made is that I need to make more of a montage rather than just using whole photographs. This will help to give the analysis of the artwork more depth than what it is at the moment and will actually make the whole process more engaging and creative.
So, I will now concentrate on producing just 10 pages of the Conservative Manifesto that will be using photomontage. The montages themselves do not need loads of images, but just a select few to make a point and it is a case that less is more. These will then be printed as PDF proofs as if they are part of a larger document that are at the stage of final approval before being committed to larger print run. These will then be printed on normal paper and presented stapled together in the corner as if they are waiting approval. I think this will probably be the best way to present the montages as it will show that it is part of a bigger document and will highlight them being part of a process to reproduce them.
